Lady Dons finish season with strong play…

Friday Night the Lady Dons of Del Mar finished out their 2009-2010 season at Overfelt High School. Bringing home yet another tie. Bringing their total to 7 in league play and 9 for the year. This game like so many others was very exiting to watch, and at the same time, painful. The Lady Dons dominated the game from the beginning, controlling the ball and taking at least 3x the number of shots on goal that the Royals did. #20 Zuleyni Huizachi scored mid way through the first half, and it looked as if the Lady Dons were on their way to ending the season with a win. But the Royals came back scoring early in the second half to even it up. The Lady Dons kept up the intensity and had several more close shots as the second half wound down, but just couldn’t seem to find the net, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Although the Lady Dons finish the season with a 3-4-7 record, their heads should be held high. Throughout the entire season they were never dominated by another team, and always seemed to rise to a challenge, Playing exceptionally well against teams who ranked higher in the league standings. The Lady Dons beat the second place Westmont Warrior a couple weeks ago, and tied eventual first place finishing Sobrato on Wednesday of the past week. With fantastic play from Freshman Allison Haddian, Sandra Padilla, Keyanna Bradford, Emma Norman, and Ivy Nguyen the Dons have a bright future. They will miss seniors Hayley Norman and Suzanne Bernd and Junior foreign exchange student Gabby Tome, but have a great group of Juniors and Sophmores in Rachel Schauer, Sammy Steeves, Brenda Valine, Zuleyni Huizachi, Christina De La Pena, Olivia Haddian, and Sophia Brinton to lead the team next year.

Although the record may not show it, the season was very successful and always exciting. Congratulations on a Great Year Lady Dons! Can’t wait for next season………..

Tough week…

What seemed to be a rebound on Feb 3rd when the Dons beat the Westmont Warriors in their second meeting, has faded quickly with 2 losses last week to Lincoln (2-4) and Prospect (0-2), and a tie with Mt Pleasant (1-1) in a make up game Monday of this week. The Lady Dons have played “good” soccer, but “good” soccer has not produced many goals or wins in the past couple weeks.

With only 2 games left in the season the Lady Dons will need to win them both to even out their win loss record in league play.

They meet Sobrato at Del Mar on Wednesday (Senior Recognition Game) and Overfelt on Friday to close out the regular season.

Del Mar gets one back…

After a great battle on the field last Friday against Piedmont Hills which ended in yet another tie (4th of the year in League play and 6th of the year overall) the Lady Dons came out Wednesday to meet the Westmont Warriors, who in their last meeting, handed the Dons one of their two losses this year. The Lady Dons who admittedly were a bit out of sync in their first meeting with the Warriors, came out ready to go this time, and returned the favor to a seemly over confident Westmont team. Sending Westmont home with a 1-0 loss on goal by #20 Zuleyni Huizachi who has been on an offensive terror over the past couple weeks.

The win bumps the Dons up above the Warriors in league standings. Del Mar currently sits in 4th place in the league standings with a 3-2-4 record trailing Lincoln (also with 3 wins), Prospect and Sobrato who only have 4 wins. Del Mar meets all 3 teams again before the end of the season, which provides them with a great opportunity to move up in the league standings. Today the Lady Dons go up against Mt. Pleasant at Mt Pleasant @3:15. GO DONS!

Del Mar rebounds against Overfelt with win…

The week started with a tough loss on Monday against the Prospect Panthers, but the Lady Dons didn’t let that game set the tone for the week. On goals by Senior Hayley Norman (#2) and Junior Sammy Steeves (#10) the Dons sent the Overfelt Royals walking with a loss. The win brings the Lady Dons’ league record to: 2 wins, 2 losses, and 3 ties. Del Mar will try to add another win to that record Friday afternoon at home against a fast Piedmont Hills team.

Ouch… Del Mar falls to Prospect 1-0 ..

The Lady Dons fell to the Prospect Panthers in a rain-out make up game Monday. Del Mar fought hard but fell behind 1-0 and couldn’t get it back.

The Lady Dons take on Overfelt today (Wednesday) at home (3:15pm), and then meet Piedmont Hills at Del Mar on Friday (3:15pm). Both should be great games. Go Dons!

Lady Dons battle Sobrato in nail biter

The Lady Dons of Del Mar traveled to Morgan Hill today to face the Sobrato Bull Dogs at the Morgan Hill Sports center in a game that can be described as nothing less than a nail biter. Although the game ended in a scoreless tie, it was an intense action filled game with both teams just missing on several scoring opportunities. Freshman Allison Haddian and Junior Rachel Schauer both had great shots on goal from 20-30 yards out. The first half seemed to be under control by the Lady Dons, Moving the ball down to the Sobrato end of the field and keeping Sobrato on their heels for most of the half, but as the second half began, Sobrato, a very speedy team, began to pick up the intensity, and started pushing back against the Dons and moving the ball back across midfield. Dons players Allison Haddian , Keyanna Bradford and Ivy Nguyen did a great job of holding off the offensive push by the Bulldogs and Hayley Norman, Sammy Steeves, Olivia Haddian, and Rachel Schauer with help from the rest of the Dons did their best to keep the momentum on the Del Mar side of the ball. In the final 10 minutes of the game Sobrato cranked it up one more notch and came at the Dons with all they had. The Dons were visibly beginning to tire, and shifted into defensive mode to hold off the final Sobrato attack. In the final minutes not even the fancy footwork of a Sobrato player could break the Dons, and the game came to a scoreless end.

Lady Dons end the week with a win and a tie

Wednesday, Del Mar faced Mt Pleasant at home… Coach Padilla decided to move around some of the positions players and had a favorable result, The Lady Dons took care of Mt. Pleasant 3 – 0. Sophmore Olivia Haddian scored two goals and Junior Sammy Steeves scored another off a header. On Friday the Lady Dons seemed like the were going to roll over Lincoln too. Jumping out to an early lead when Junior Rachel Schauer arched a beautiful shot in over the reach of the Lion’s goalie from 20 yards out, followed minutes later by a great center by Junior Brenda Valine from the right corner to Sammy Steeves who then drilled it into the same spot as Schauer’s previous goal right over the goalies reach. The Lady Dons seemed to be on a roll, but Lincoln was not going to lay down. Lincoln held tuff against the Don’s and by the middle of the second half had fought back with two goals of there own to bring it even 2-2. The last 20 minutes of the game was a nail biter with multiple opportunities on both sides of the ball to score again. But neither could find the net. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Westmont 2 – Del Mar 0

Friday the Lady Dons traveled to Westmont. Going up against a tough Warrior’s teams the Lady Dons couldn’t get the upper hand and fell behind 2 -0. Westmont held the Lady Dons scoreless handing them their first loss of the season.

Lady Dons Run Ragged, but Hold Tuff against Piedmont Hills

Wednesday evening , the Lady Dons opened up League play against the Piedmont hIlls Pirates at Piedmont Hill under the lights. This game was a prime example of how a sport which can have an game end scoreless can still be exciting. It was non-stop action on both sides of the ball. watch some of the action below…
